What a great thread O.K. did Laureen know that Jack was gay? Did she lie on the phone when she was talking to Ennis about what happened to Jack? Did she really know that he go beaten up? O.K. and this one might seem really dense but when they talked for the last time up on the mountain and Ennis was saying to Jack that speech about the whole Mexico thing? I didn't understand what he (Ennis) was saying " What I don't know, all them things that I don't know, would get you killed if I come to know them, and I aint jokin" O.K. this speech I didn't understand what he was trying to saying? Can someone explain Did Ennis actually end up taking Jacks ashes out of the house rolled up in the shirts? Do you think when Ennis said at the end "Jack I swear" he really meant "I love you"? Oh goodness I could go on Everyone is right the ending was powerful, but it just left you feeling so empty and heart broken (I guess that's what Ang wanted) but to the point where I ' physically ' felt ill and like I was Ennis What a way to leave the movie theatre

Anne Hathaway's performance was so powerful you really don't know for sure, and I believe that one is up to your discretion (unless anyone else has a thought on it. I think that she either knew and was accepting of it... or just thought they were close friends as she never personally had a realisation like Alma -I have yet to read the book so that may hold more answers It is hard to tell if she knew if he got beaten up or not. I don't think -personally- that she did. I do however think she was lying. But if you watch closely in the scene where he is getting smashed and beaten he is his skinny, facialhairless man again, it seems to be young Jack, and Enn's image of him getting beaten up/ Here I believe Ennis is reiterating the fact that he can foresee what happens to gay men -the flash back to his childhood and the homosexual -Earl was it?- who got killed... unpleasantly. He is meaning to say, he knows what is going on in Mexico but it is dangerous, and their actions could get either or both of them killed. This one can also be taken in a non-literal sense

See in regaurds of the 'ashes' I think that he did cause the mother was acting a little 'weird' IMO When she was asking if he wanted to go up to the room and her saying that she kept it exactly like he left it and so on? When he also gave her the shirts it just looked (to me) like there was something inside of them? I don't know, that's my thoughts.

I would like to know what happens to Alma and Lureen. I know Alma marries, but does her husband die, or does she get another divorce. Does Lureen happen to get another husband. I know he is most likely to be be but, is Lureen's dad happy?
These are questions that I fear no one can answer. Not even Annie.

But there it leaves for your imagination (I love this point and one bit I love most of the film) ...you get to pick! And everyone's choice can be different and make sense all the same.
Though I agree, at times you want closure, though if there was that... it would not make for such a thought-provoking ending > film.... ?

Rightly said Kelley I agree with you that it is left up to your imagination, you are free to fill in the blanks as you want to. Although I would bet that Ennis dies alone

I've viewed this film more times than any other, and I like to think of myself as a movie buff; when I say to friends go see this movie they say "You think every movie is GREAT. guilty as charged BUT I don't even want to share the experience with any one It breaks me up every time I see it and I honestly lost track of how many times I've seen It... The only other movies that I watch over and over again are or were "DONNIE DARKO" "PLEASANTVILLE" and the "SPIDERMAN " MOVIES What does that tel you Of course I do watch "The GOOD" GIRL & "Moonlight MILE" Quite a bit

In the scene where they reunite after 4 years,, when Ennis was watching Jack parking the car from the window,, there was some1 in the car next to Jack. (I noticed him yesterday). Is it Lureen's father?

Oooooooooooooh good call I need to watch and analyze that bit again, but it definitely could be related to the part when Ennis says something along the lines, "When you go into town, do you ever get the feeling... like when someone looks at you they know... and then pretty soon everyone is looking at you like they all know too?" Because as the truck drove by, weren't the men quite close... maybe I am completely off base- it is getting quite late!

It means something, that is sure! But I cannot tell what... I guess you are right Kelley, it could be related to Ennis's words!
Anyway, thank you Scot for telling us about that mystery!

In my most crazy thoughts (Well, it's because i'm naive!), I want to think that Jack is not dead! Lureen's father throws him of the house, sends Jack in Mexico!, and tells everybody he's dead! One day, Jack come back to Ennis's and it's like "Wow, surprise!"!! Ennis understand his mistakes and they live together! Well, I know, I'm a crazy fool, but sometimes, I hope they could live their love story endlessly... Hey, that's exactly what I thougt!!! Well, maybe I'm naive too! ;D I don't think that Jack is dead, and the story with his father is great too! That's really a good idea!

Please, what is the last line in the movie?? I thinkhe says"There you go sweetheart", when he buttons up the shirt. But some people are saying he says, "Jack, I swear". Swear what? It's way more then 3 words and I don't hear the Jack part at all. Also does anyone think the two shirts he finds are his and Jack's from the last time they were togather??
