I watched the beat up scene like 10 times. It wasn't the young Jack. It was indeed Jack, the present Jack--he had a mustache. I believe Lureen had Jack killed. When Ennis went up Jack's parents' house (when he was supposedly to scatter Jack's ashes), Jack's father mentioned that Jack used to say that he and Ennis will run a ranch up there. But that spring, he brought a different man up to that place. I think it was Randall, the man Jack and his wife befriended at a dinner (he made a slight pass on Jack that night). And Jack was going to leave Lureen. Maybe Jack got tired of waiting for Ennis will come around. So he settled for Randall (or maybe another guy) and was about to leave his wife. Lureen's personality depicted in the movie wasn't the type that would let that pass. So, she had Jack killed. That's what I think happened. :'(

okay hello everyone. I don't want to put it this way, but I should say that all your interpretations are well wrong. Jack hasn't dided and everything his wife told was a lie. She knew Jack was gay and she knew that he was "killed" for that. And yes, he was attacked and beaten and killed because he is gay. That's why the movie makes me cry everytime I see it.

This is my interpretation of what happened, sorry guys... Ennis had Jack killed. He said his final words "Jack I swear.." once before, remember? He sweared that if Jack went with other men he would... I think he got to know that Jack had a relation with the other man and hired some men to beat him up. In his heart he loved Jack but couldnt share him with anyone and he also felt that Jack had somehow ruined his life by introducing him a lifestyle that wasnt appropriate that time. He had to live in a lie the rest of his life because of that and he also lost his family because of him. He acts as if he didnt know what happened because at some level he didnt want it to happen but couldnt help it. He imagined what had happened because he wasnt there at that time. He just got the message that the deal had been done at that phonecall. His remorse is real but sinister. He wanted to keep Jack just as his own and the only way he could reach that point was when Jack had died. Tragic but thats the way I saw it.

It's obvious - Alma killed Jack and Alma Junior was her accomplice. They were the ones with the real motive.

I just watched this for the first time. I think that Anna tells the story to Ennnis because she wants to believe it. And Ennis doesn't believe her story and creates in his mind what he thinks happened to Jack which is him getting beat up. I truly believe that when they show Ennis pulling out Jack's shirt it is bloody on the cuff and arm showing he had committed suicide.
