Okay, ill begin. For people who've seen this film, was anyone else incredibly impacted by it? I mean, this movie simply ripped out my heart and stepped on it. I was left with nothing. It was terrible. Now, since i've seen the movie quite a few times, ive been working on getting over it...but its not working at all. Is anyone else impacted so much by it?

I was profoundly impacted by it. I openly love gay men and work with several of bisexual nature. They are some of the most feeling and sweet people I know. I think it is twisted in society that people feel they have the right or need to judge how two people love another. If we take it to a Biblical level... it is 'wrong' yes, but God is the only one that has the ability to judge it.
I loved the theatricalness of it to; how things played through. The tire being cause of death to Ennis' witnessing and then to Jack. Jack's dreams and how they faded... the differences between the two family lives... everything!

It's just such a deep and emotional story and I think it's just so beautiful.

I think I was more affected by the lives of the people around Ennis and Jack. Their two wives, Jack's parents...their children. Ennis and Jack's love pulled so many people apart. It was a really fascinating insight into real people's lives. There's nothing more dramatic or heartbreaking than a story that is as real as life.

Yes, you just feel so much for the children and your heart goes out to them and the situations they are put in. And what Alma had to go through... finding the note still on the fishing pole There were so many lies just so their love could exist and flare. It was tragic from the beginning but beautiful despite its fate

This film really touched me. I guess it is becaues it is such a rough and, at the same time, beautiful story involving two people who deeply love each other no matter what they have to cope up with in order to be together.
I also think that it really brought some justice to gay people in general. I have a few gay friends and I love them to death. I am very very open minded and I have no problems being around them and watching this movie certainly didn't make me feel uncomfortable at all. This film showed that people from the same gender can truly love each leaving stereotypes behind. I really think that everyone should give it a chance and watch it because it could change their own views about life itself.
In other matters I have to say that this movie has the most talented acting I have seen in years (even though Crash is close as well). Everyone, absolutely everyone is just plain great in the movie. Overall I would have to pick Jake Gyllenhaal who before this film I couldn't care less really. I have became a fan of him because of Jack Twist. I saw him before in Donnie Darko which I love, and The Day After Tomorrow (another great action/adventure flick) but he was just another actor. But his portrayal of Jack Twist really moved me. He seemed so vulnerable and yet so strong. Heth was absolutely great too, even though I think his acting -from my perspective- wasn't as good as Jake's. His Ennis del Mar really never got me as Jack did, until the very end of the movie.
The girls are also perfect, both of them. I really discovered a great actress in Anne Hathway who I thought she would be doing idiotic romantic comedies for teenagers for a few more years. She really gave an acting lesson in her phone call scene. Not many people can show that many contained emotions with a camer just showing nothing but your face up close.
As far as awards go, I am really really happy that Brokeback had just recieved so much from them because I really believe he's given the public just so much more. Now I hope it gets the final and most important recognition of all, the Oscar, that way more people would give this film a chance and they might discovered that is way more than "the gay cowboy movie".
I hope this isn't really hard to read, I apologize for my English because it isn't my mother language so I guess there are plenty of mistakes in what I just wrote. Sorry.

Wow. Thanks for writing that, JNR. I love hearing people's opinions and your English is fantastic, certainly no worries on that score ;D. I thought Jake Gyllenhaal should have been nominated for best actor rather than supporting....but hey, I guess the powers that be didn't think that was a good idea. I agree with you about Anne Hathway. I thought she'd let the side down but everyone gave such controlled performances. I wonder how much of that is down to Ang Lee's direction.

thanks brokeback. That is truly what I feel about the movies and I guess there's more but I just can't tell properly in English. My vocabulary is not that extense LOL.
I think this movie should be shown at highschools so people would learn to be tolerant from an early stage of their lives. That's my 2 cents (^_^)

(What is your native language? Many of us are not first to English.. French is mine if it is easier to discuss that way ) And those are some great 2 cents!!! In many areas it is tolerated and in others the film is so controversial (that could be a topic of its own, maybe I should make that)

Well, Ang Lee is an amazing director. I've loved all his films and I think he really does bring the best from all the actors he works with. It happened with newcomer Kate Winslet in Sense & Sensibility, she was nominated for an Oscar as well. He did the same with Eric Bana and the always perfect Jennifer Connelly in Hulk, and he also made a real actress out of Jewel in Riding with the Devil. That's why I think I have become a fan of the actors through this movie, they amazed me really, all of them. Even though now, watching other films from them I think JG is the best one of all. I don't to extend myself too much here but I definitely think Ang Lee is a master with his actors. Brokeback, my first language is Spanish, so I guess the French wouldn't work out very well. Je parle un peu de français.

Some great comments in here already.. JNR your love of the movie and all about it shines through. Great comment about it being shown in schools, but it won't happen, they may get to read the book though. Heres hoping.. My thoughts after one viewing, (this may change after repeated viewings) I was uncomfortable and squirming in my seat to start (maybe preconceived ideas) the scenery relaxed me somewhat and then I forgot that they were two guys in love and the love story and ride of all it entailed, the good and the bad took over. I had to keep reminding myself that 1963 is a long way down the road from 2006 and the world is much more comfortable with same sex relationships. Hence all the awards BbM is receiving (and rightly it should) but do you think it would have been tolerated back in 1963? I don't think so. Lee seems able to bring something special out of actors that I don't think they even know they have, I have seen it happen time and again in his movies. I love how his subtleties worked in this movie especially 'the closet' scenes they were superb and hopefully a lesson to anyone not to miss out on something that could have been so special but was missed out on due to other peoples opinions and persecutions. I hope this movie goes from strength to strength and many many more people get to see it.

Lee certainly has SUCH a gift (I have a thread started for him too ) The Closet scenes and all the corrolations are beautifully tied. I love the flashbacks... and Ennis' guilt as a common theme, so painful and so powerful

I went shopping before I went to the theatre and bought a whole box of tissues just in case. Hell, I needed all of them! When the credits started rolling I just felt like I had the wind knocked out of me, I was so overwhelmed. I absolutely adored the scene of Heath holding those two shirts to his chest, it was heartbreaking and I bawled my eyes out. I'm definitely going to see it again, I might be able to write something proper then.
